April Fools Day

April Fool’s Day is quite popular and celebrated by many countries so probably everyone has heard about it and recognizes it as a day full of jokes. But have you ever considered who started it and what is exactly April Fool’s Day for?

The beginning is uncertain but beliefs say it started in the sixteenth century, around 1582 in Europe as an side effect of introducing new calendar called the Gregorian Calendar by Charles IX. As a result January 1st became the first day of the year. But many people didn't hear about it, others didn't want to accept changes and they were continuing to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st. This is the reason why there were called fools and they became the victims of several jokes just like invitations for fake parties or stumble across salt in the sugar box. There are other sources that say April Fools' Day comes from pre-Christian times, when the first day of May was the sign of coming summer, time to treat the plants and those who were doing it prematurely; they were called „April fools”.

After playing trick the fool should say „April Fool”. It's a signal for a victim who realizes the true. Generally the whole celebration is done in the sense of humor and doesn't accept any true harm, so we should be careful in our hoaxes although the stranger joke is the better joke. Success is achieved if our victim falls in joke even for a moment.

But in several countries April Fool’s Day may look different. For example: In Mexico it is celebrated in December 28. In England jokes are played only till midday. Moreover that day requires special vocabulary. For example if you are fool you are called 'gob', but a trick can be also played on you, in that situation you are a noodle. In France this day is called a fish and regular hoax is to send friends a present made up in the form of the fish. In Scotland this day is called Gowkie Day or Hunt the Gowk and it lasts for 48 hours. Our Polish „prima aprilis” is from Latin, which obviously means April First. Various hoaxes are prepared by people, the media (which sometimes cooperate to make the "information" more official) and even public institutions.

That was history and culture part, but now we can go to a more pleasant thing: jokes.

The typical jokes include setting every clock in the house in the wrong time, putting toothpaste between the sides of cookies ect. but I picked out for you the 7 biggest jokes I liked from the worlds list:

1. Alabama Changes the Value of Pi

On Aprils 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter you could read an information that the Alabama State legislature decided in democratic voting to change the value of pi from 3,14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3,0. Alabama legislature ended getting hundreds of calls from people protesting against this change.

2.The Left-Handed Whopper

Also in 1998 Burger King announced the information of a new sandwich in their offer: Left-Handed Whooper especially created for 32 million of left-handed Americans. The Whopper included the same ingredients as the original one, they were only rotated about 180 degrees. The best thing is that a lot of people requested that kind of sandwich, and the others were ordering normal Whoppers „their own right handed version”.

3. The Derbyshire Fairy

Lebanon Circle Magic posted on March 2007 a few pictures of an 8-inch mummified creature resembling a fairy! Accompanying article explained the creature has been found by a man walking along an old road in Derbyshire. Text and images spread fast around the internet and portal received a lot of mails and even more visitors on their page. Next day the author and owner of the site – Dan Baines confessed to reporters and his followers that was a hoax and the creature was made by himself, but even after he said the truth, he continued to receive numerous emails from enthusiasts of little fairy.

4. Big Ben Goes Digital

The BBC reported that Big Ben was going to be changed for a digital version. The British were shocked and BBC ended getting loads of mails and calls from angry people. Can you imagine digital Big Ben?

5. YouTube... 100 years old.

You could feel shocked using YT this year on Aprils First, because all films were changed with special filter making them to look and sound older.

6. World of End Tomorrow

On March 31, 1940 people could read horrible information, as the Franklin Institute announced - the world would end the next day. The radio station KYW seized on the information and started to spread panic with such a message: "Your worst fears that the world will end are confirmed (...) the world will end at 3 P.M. Eastern Standard Time tomorrow. This is no April Fool joke.(...)"
The reaction was immediate and history spread around people. The author of the joke – William Castellini was the Institute's press agent and he „just” intended to use the fake information to show his new book at the institute titled „How Will the World End?”. After this cause, the Institute dismissed Castellini.

7. Introducing Gmail Motion

And 5 from Poland this year:

1. Nobel Prize in Literature for Jaroslaw Kaczynski...

  1. I believe that this one day of a year never hurts anyone. It is a day where you can make someone mad and funny. Nowadays, people are very busy, busy and often do not even have time to make a joke to someone. This day makes people even for a moment could become detached from reality that surrounds them. However, you must remember to not offend anyone, and not too much scared, because it may have fatal final effects. I know one funny joke. When you want to make a joke someone tell your mother that your girlfriend is pregnant and you know her only few hours... It will be funny situation. I think that this holiday is necessary and i won't stop it. i like the most this one with our president. And that is all about 1st April:-)

  2. This day means for me exactly nothing. I usually do not remember about this day so I`m an easy target.
I admire people who spend all day long to invent many stupid jokes to have a satisfaction of hoodwink.
Each one presented was nothing spectacular. Jokes about death for example are inappropriate. Many can be irretrievable so we have to bear in mind that fact.

  3. We should note that the jokes must be appropriate and should not offend anyone and even more upset. It is the only day of the year when the jokes are allowed. Can be a situation that day we hear about something terrible and think it was a joke we don't want to believe becouse we know that is a Prima Aprillis, we laugh and then it turns out that this is true. From presented ones I liked the most - Malysz will play in.. Ranczo :)

  4. Hm, I really dislike April's Fools Day, because I get some not fairs jokes sometime ago and until now I really dislike AFD. But I know AFD jokes from yours list: The Derbyshire Fair, Our president shaved his moustache! and Teleportation became a reality. ;)

  5. I am not sure if the left-handed whopper was an april fools joke - I have heard about it and it was considered as a sales pitch and a lot of people caught into it and they wanted this left-handed version (despite the fact that it was really the same as normal whopper).
And going back to the pranks. I have a story connected with 1.04 it is funny but for sure not for the man to whom it happend to. He went to job as everyday, his boss came and gave him denunciation (he fired him) - so this man thought it is joke (not good one) and just smiled and came back to work. But the next day when he came to job, his boss told him that it was not a joke :D :(.
So conclusion is that jokes are good, but they should be well-thought-out and shouldn't to harm to anyone

  6. Haha... that left hand whopper is great :D
It is funny becouse it is so stupid.

I always try to make some kind of joke at prima aprillis , but it is hard becouse every one knows that it could be a joke, so they are suspicious.

  7. According to me, the best jokes are the ones I tend to believe in. It's hard to arrange such a joke because it usually has to have good timing and be realistic

I could believe that Małysz will play in Ranczo because I really don't care any more about the ski-jumper and care even less about the TV series. Special guests starring on TV are quite common so it could happen.

The visualization of our president is funny, though.

The Whopper prank shows people's stupidity, so I wouldn't call a person who fell for this joke an April Fool but a fully-fledged idiot.

The dark side of the April Fools day for me is that I can't read proper news on the Internet. Every portal is flooded with false articles and pranks. When I want to read what's going on in the world, it's pretty much impossible.

  8. I would rather prefer there was no April Fools day ;) I never succeed in pulling one's leg that day. I always play the 'gob' on that day...

It doesn't mean I lack a sens of humour. No way, I always consider myself as a highly funny person. In my humble opinion, of course!:)

The Gmail motion is a quite fresh prank :) I've seen it this year and almost got catched. I did not suspect anything in the first minute of the movie, till the man in the suite started to present all the gestures. That was hilarious!

  9. I like April Fools Day. It is time when even the most official people and organizations can do or say something funny. We can make jokes without consequences and being judged by the others.
I really enjoy the joke about The Derbyshire Fairy. I could believe in it ;)
The one about our president moustache was also very funny.
    What pranks did I do?
At the last Fools Day I changed my last name on facebook and I pretended I married Japanese. My friends were in shock ;)

  10. Well, to me the whole idea of April fool's day is not as noticeable as a few years before. Even though I really like the idea and the creativity of most of it's practitioners. I really think we should keep that tradition.

From the mentioned jokes I liked the one with changing value of number Pi. As far as I know mathematician's conservativeness and accuracy when it comes to describing world with the numbers, it could really confuse a lot of them :)

I really hate jokes which are just dangerous, many people don't really think about possible consequences of their pranks, that's very inappropriate.
