'You see things vacationing on a motorcycle completely different. In a car you’re always in a compartment, and because you’re used to it you don’t realize that through that car window everything you see is just ‘ TV’. You’re a passive observer and it is all moving next to you.
On a cycle the frame is gone. You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming. That concrete whizzing by five inches below your foot is the real thing, the same stuff you walk on, it’s right there, so blurred you can’t focus on it, yet you can put your foot down and touch it anytime, and the whole thing, the whole experience, is never removed from immediate consciousness.'

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? Maybe you ride it every day?
I would like to present you three types of them.
First part is about HD/chopper ;)
Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod

Harley was created by three man: William S. Harley, Arthur Davidson and Walter Davidson. In 1901 the work on this legendary motorbike has began. The rumor says the first carburetor was made from tomato cans. Two years later three motorcycles with a capacity of 25 cubic inches, which can develop speed of 72 km/h came into being. In the next three years 50 HD (called Silent Grey Fellow) were produced and sold.

In 1909 there was created a symbol of Harley Davidson – two-cylinder V-shaped engine. The American Army became interested in Harley Davidson. During testing, the military realized that HD is a bike reliable even in a difficult terrain. They were needed to wage the war with Mexico and later in Europe. The beginning of the war caused a shift into the production of WLA model. It came to Poland with the Soviet army. As part of the loan The Red Army war received from the United States nearly 29 thousand of these machines.
For those who loved WLA Harley Davidson created a BAD BOY model.

Chopper
Replica of chopper used in 'Easy Rider' movie,

Chopper was created in the late 50th in United States. The motorcyclist riding on Harleys came to an idea to make their bikes lighter to increase their performance. They took off unnecessary elements (e.g. front fender, wide front tires, lights). Chopper-type motorbikes were popularized by the movie 'Easy Rider'.
And you?
Do you ride motorbikes?
Do you prefer motorbike or car? Why?
How do you like HD/chopper – type motorbikes?

Uh, to be honest I don't like motorbikes. They are appealing and interesting but I'd never ride on it. I see them as machines of death. I know we can say thesame things about cars but in car you have more chance to survive, it depends on accident ofc.
ReplyDeleteI belive if we compare motorbikes and cars, motorbikes will win if talk about traffic jams, since they can pass waiting cars and it's faster way to move in the city and to find place for park!
But on longer journeys I wouldn't feel safe, it's also difficult to take any luggage.
Maybe I undervalue motorbikes but I just don't believe they are safe. In car I feel like in metallic can which makes me safer. I have a friend who loves motorbikes but when he drives fast he uses special link which is fixed between the motorbike and his... neck. He says that he prefer to die fast in accident than survive with complete disability, because even if you can survive an accident, probably you will never be able to stand up.
Motorbikes surely looks cool and macho but I just don't trust them ;)
But I like watching guys on motorbike gatherings, they look fantastic, especially older geezers in those dark, leather jacket, long beards, black glasses and scarf bandages. I like that mood and I'm happy I was able to meet some of them in Poland ;)
As for last question... well, I can only say by looking but I think HD is more practical while chopper looks sooo classy. So, for riding HD, for flash chopper ;)
Me neither. I don't like motorbikes... I'm sorry to say that ;) I've always preferred just ordinary cars. That cover of metal sheet around the car always gives me that feeling of safety... Maybe it's deceiving, maybe it's just fake safety :) But still it's better than nothing...
ReplyDeleteI can additionally say that always when I'm driving the bikes, motorbike or scooters are always making me angry... You may not agree with me, you may hate me for that ;] But I strongly believe that roads were simply designed for vehicles with four wheels.
But, shh!... on the other hand I sometimes feel like having a ride on a chopper ;) Don't tell anyone.
I don't ride motorbikes because I don't have it. I have driver license for motorbikes but I have nerver had motorbike. I think about buying one but I don't have now enough money for my favourite motorbike. One day comes moment when I collect money and with smile on my face I will buy my first motorbike. i like motorbike but I know that it is not as safe as car. On motorbike you have only 2 wheels and there is no body. In car you have airbags, body, 4 wheels. It is much more safety than motorbike. Motorbikes are for wise people who love their life. I don't really like choppers. I prefer something fastest like yamaha r1 or suzuki hayabusa.
ReplyDeleteI don't ride motorbikes. I tried and I prefair cars. Nevertheless riding a car could be great too.
ReplyDeleteRiding HD/chopper is all about riding, not going to a target. You enjoy the process of riding. Of course that is immpossible in Poland. There are traffic jams everywhere, roads are in so bad shape. When I read title of this article I can only think of roads in USA. So imagine now that you are not riding HD/chopper motorbike, but old muscle Car. More than 5liters under hood, so much power so close to you. Voice of car is amazing. I think I will like that much more than a motorbike.
I don't ride every day because don't have own motorcycle but in the past I have ridden a motorcycle. It was very long time ago and I didn't have driver license for motorbikes even for car that time. I was taking a motorcycle from my grandfather (he didn't know about that :) and was riding on off-roads and I loved it. I remember that my older sister taught me how to ride:)
ReplyDeleteI need to say that cars are more safe and comfortable than motorbike. Polish roads aren't prepared for motorbikes. What I prefer it's depend from destination and count of people which I want to take with me. Always was dreaming about having one HD so I hope that one day I will be able to buy one and of course I will have time for riding :)
I am thinking about making the license for bike but I am a bit afraid to ride a bike. In car maybe I am sorrounded with frame but I feel more safe thanks to it. On a bike some idiot (a lot of them on our roads) will hit you and your chances are low. Ofcourse when truck hits a car chances are also low but car and car crash is more probable to survive.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE motorbikes!! When I always see motorbikes I listen them, because I love their sound while driving. The best sounds have Harley Davidson, they've typical sounds :) You don't know? Then listen to different bikes and Harley Davidson, you'll see diference. I never rode motorbike and I don't want in future, because they're "killing machine". I like to watching not ridding.
ReplyDeleteFor me safer is car, because that have protective cushions, but I know they didn't work sometime. And you can transport more than on motorcycle. ;)
I regret that when I was on my drivers license course I didn't opt for cat. A aswell. Bikes seem to be a perfect cure for traffic jams and paid parking zones.
ReplyDeleteSome suggested I should get myself a scooter but I just hate the sound they make so it's out of the question.
A perfect bike for me would be a naked/streetfighter type alhought the V-Rod is just gorgeous, shame it's so expensive.
A car is and always will be more practical and it doesn't depend on the weather but a bike gives you more fun.
Hi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your comments!! :))
I see that opinions are divided. Some of you does not like motorbikes and some loves (like me).
I agree with all of you that riding a motorcycle is less safer than a car and you should be more carefully and think even instead of some drivers.
@villemo - it depends how luggage you need, for me one small suitcase is almost always enough and this much luggage is possible to take when you ride a motorbike. "Link fixed between the motorbike and his... neck".. Wow.. This is hardcore..
@Michał Kąkol - I won't ;)
@Artur Gwiazda - I agree with you about the safety. Money is always a problem for me too :) Good motorbike is expensive (not mention about extra costs)
@Piotr Dorywalski - Oh, yes. USA roads have totally different quality. We can't even compare them with polish ones ;) I am not a huge fan of big cars, just prefer motorbikes ;)
@estudiante - I was doing the same thing ;) but with my brothers motorbikes ;)
@kamyk - I agree. Idiots are everywhere :((
@grafikarolina - Yes, HD engine sound is like a music :))
@Adam Młodziejowski - good luck with naked/streetfighter, maybe in the future you will decide to have one ;)
I've never ridden motorcycle only a "motorynka" :D But I've got a bunch of friends who do it whenever they can. I would like to try some day to ride on a motorcycle as it seems like a great fun! I'd like to ride chopper and a chaser too, but I think it's very demanding and you need to be very skilled to ride on these kind of bikes. I don't even have a driving licence so it's hard to tell which type of vehicle I'd prefer. I think both of them have great advantages and disadvantages so I think I'll have both of them and choose due to the weather, traffics and other circumstances ;D
ReplyDeleteI like chopper and HD very much. I remember when I was child, I watched 'Easy Rider' and dreamed about driving chooper. Fortunately I was too young to understand what they were doing in this movie and I only had 'motorynka' which pretended to be my chopper :D
I have never ridden a motorcycle, although I think, they're good alternative to cars as a mean of transport -- they allow to overcome most commuting problems associated with cars -- traffic jams, fuel costs (motorbikes usually are more fuel-efficient) and lack (or cost) of parking spaces. I think I'm not brave enough to ride a motorcycle, especially in Warsaw, mostly due to recklessness of some car drivers, I would feel very unsafe on Warsaw streets.
ReplyDeleteI do have a driver's license for a motorcycle and I' m hoping to buy one someday, for now my car will just have to do. I can't say I prefer motorcycles or cars I think that they are created for different things, car is more for transportation and a motorcycle is for the joy rides. As far as the HD/chopper-type motorcycles are concerned, they are great but unfortunately Polish roads are not in a good enough condition for them. Also I think it is much more enjoyable to ride a motorcycle in the middle of nowhere than on a crowded road.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of cars and do not intend to change for two wheels. There are many reasons. Primary safety, convenience and more practical than a motorbike. I just love to drive. Sometimes I get in to a car and I'm going with no purpose.
ReplyDeleteDriving around town with 100-200km speed between cars creates enormous danger on the road. For sure it is more faster to move faster from point A to point B in Warsaw, but is it worth risking lives for these 5 minutes?
I really love topic of your presentation. You give us a quintessence of riding motorbike in one sentence :). I definitely prefer sport motorbikes but this is probably because of my age right now. I am almost sure that 20 year later I will ride a chopper like one or maybe a streetfighter.
ReplyDeleteBack to Maciejs comment... man nobody forces you to drive 100-200kmph between cars. You mix up true motorbike riders with imbeciles who think are immortal. Going further your way of thinking I can also say about stereotype about bmw e36 drivers wearing sport clothes and riding 200kmph with broken exhousts on crowded roads. Speeding motorbike weighing 160-200kg is not a danger agains speeding car weighing 1,5 ton.
Maciej no offense ofcourse :)
