Environmental Pollution - Part 3

Pollution-ending Technologies

Raising people’s awareness of environmental concerns can undoubtedly lessen human impact on nature. Simple steps can already make a difference. However, it is not only individuals who become deeply concerned about environmental issues. Scientists are introducing more and more advanced technologies aimed at combating pollution.

Although drinking contaminated water is highly discouraged, there seems to be no other choice if every third person in the world suffers from the lack of clean water. Luckily nanotechnology appears to show considerable promise in water purification. One of South Africa’s companies has come up with a teabag-resembling water filter. Another company, based in Switzerland, has invented a portable water filter called LifeStraw. This inexpensive purification tool has served thousands of people since its invention in 2005. Various innovative technologies were also used in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

With regards to air pollution, scientists have not been any less creative. In Lima, Peru, for instance, some researchers have invented a filtration system known as the Super Tree. Installed in different locations around the city, this mechanism imitates a real tree, purifying up to 200,000 cubic meters of air daily.

Experts cannot stay indifferent to tons of garbage, piling up in landfills. Therefore, various new technologies are being developed each day to lessen the negative impact of solid pollution. A remarkable example of such innovation was presented by the University of Dublin in the form of a bacterium that has ability to transform plastic foam into a biodegradable plastic.

The problem of light pollution, seemingly less hazardous, is equally important to scientists, as it causes ecosystem disruption. In order to tackle this problem, researchers propose new LED lighting systems. These systems can save approximately 75% of energy, when compared to traditional lights.

Such innovations as hybrid and electric cars seem to have overcome the problem of noise pollution. Other, less scientific solutions that minimize aggression and frustration caused by noise, include a ban on the morning usage of leaf blowers, chainsaws or lawn mowers in residential areas.

Questions:

Do you know any other new technologies which helps fighting with pollutants?

What do you think about mentioned ones?

  1. In my opinion the biggest problem for the environment they are junk. In big cities people are beginning to segregate them, it start be fashionable. And very well. But in smaller cities this is very big problem. People throw rubbish in the forest. I think it is caused by high cost. People do not want to pay for garbage disposal. I think that if the government introduced free garbage throw, this problem will be over. What about another things? I think that the hybrid and electric cars is a good idea, but we still need many years to improve these methods.

  2. In my opinion an upcoming issue may be lack of sufficient drinking water. It seems that in some areas of our planet water is faster contaminated then filtered. This could cause lack of drinking water in these areas.

  3. No I don't know any other new technologies which help fighting with environment pollution.

  4. I thing that real huge change in ecology will come when there will be no more oil on the earth (or it will be too expensive to gather). Even a president of some big motor company said that there won't be any big revolution in car drives as long as there is oil on this planet and not even one day before last barrel will end. So we have to wait for real eco-cars for everyday use.
Ofcourse it concerns only air pollution, there is huge field for other eco-revolutions which, unforunatelly, I don't know:).

  5. In my opinion, people should use the newest achievements in the field of science to solve the problems caused by environmental pollution. The solutions that were presented in the presentation seem reasonable. It is also beneficial that a lot of legal regulations were created to deal with the problem of pollution. To conclude, I think that scientific achievements supported by adequate legal regulations can help us enjoy earth's resources without losing them in the long run.

  6. I'm not interested in the subject of pollution, however, I like the solutions for less exploitation of oil to produce diesel. hybrid engines for cars have plenty of advantages- collect energy from the drive to the battery and later the energy can be used by pushing only one button in the car.
