In my opinion, this has been the most revolutionary event. I remember starting to use the web 10 years ago, using a slow dial-up modem, to make my first e-mail address. In those days the Internet was only just beginning to play an important role in the every-day life of an average Pole.
In 2000, Facebook didn't exist yet, and neither did Twitter, the Polish language Wikipedia or many other popular sites. Today, as soon as we feel like we want to watch an old music video, or commercial, or any other video clip, we don't have much trouble searching for and watching them on YouTube. Everything information that we can possibly think of is all available in arm's reach.
Another important novelty is the development of online games - which not only caused technological progress in computer hardware, but also improvement the Internet speed. The most popular online game in existence is World of Warcraft, released in 2004 - with almost 9 million legally paying players.
Returning to the topic of various social networking sites - People often criticise the Internet for having damaging regular social practices and causing us to isolate ourselves from one another. I disagree with this opinion. Thanks to various forums and communities, we can easily find and get to know other people who share our (sometimes unusual) interests. We can make friends from distant places that we would never have the chance to meet in our lives otherwise.
The Internet also gave people the opportunity to shine with their unique personalities and talents. I'm sure that everyone thinks of Justin Bieber as an example - a teenage singer from Canada who was discovered by his recordings on YouTube and rapidly gained a worldwide fame - Or perhaps of the inconspicuous Susan Boyle, whose performance on the show "Britain's Got Talent" moved people around the world, with her singing being broadcast on-line.
Of course, the gallery of "Internet Celebrities" is huge; sometimes all it takes to gain fame is to show something funny, such as the speeches of Krzysztof Kononowicz, the kitschy "Lubelski Full" or the absurd song about "Jozin from Bazin", all well known in Poland.
As an artist myself, I am most pleased with the inception of various online galleries (such as DeviantART) where I can easily present my creations, find potential commissioners and get to know other artists. There are also the dark sides associated with the contemporary use of the Internet. It allows criminals to communicate with each other, terrorists to become organized, child pornography to be in circulation and various kinds of cruelties. All it takes is to upload a nasty photograph or a humiliating video clip to ruin someone's life.
Questions:
1.Can you imagine your life today without access to the Internet?
2.What did your daily experience with the Internet look like 10 years
ago, and how does it look today?
Unfortunately I can't imagine my life without Internet or mail.It is really helpful but sometimes I feel like prisoner of technique. I feel that it steals my time everyday. However I'm not such a computer nerd like most of people which I know. I can spend my day without checking my e-mail. It is really a lot. I hate community portals and I don't use them. It is such a waste of time. Sorry If I hurt anyone but for me it is so strange when I see how much time my friends spend everyday on following news on facefook, reading gossip or other rubbish. They are just addicted.
ReplyDelete1.I can't also imagine that but mainly it's because of my job - if I want to earn any money I have to keep contact with clients, most of my web visits also concern my work which is also kind of my passion:). But lastly I catch myself dreaming of some complete breakdown with internet and mobile phone - but I'm also sure that I wouldn't endure it too long:)(It connects with previous topic with castaways:)
ReplyDelete2.My experiences were similar to yours - waiting for the modem to dial-up (I loved this buzzy sound:)) and looking at the clock during "surfing" not to pay too much for the phone - there was no way to get addicted to internet:).
I also remember this buzzy sound and the moment of nervous tension if the connection is successful or not:)
ReplyDeleteI'm a webdeveloper at a polish social network so you can say I live in the internet. :) Every day I'm developing at the source code, planing new features and fixing bugs. My contact with the internet doesn't stop as soon as I leave the office. My cellphone is syncing with my e-mail accounts in real time 24 hours a day. When I'm at home I always check all new articles on my favourite blogs or watch a movie from NetFlix (via an internet streaming of course). :) So can I imagine my life without internet access? To be honest - no I can't. That would change a lot for me - probably by 180 degrees.
ReplyDelete10 years ago I was already addicted to the internet and in the times of no broadband access and no flat rates I was paying huge bills. :)
I thing nowadays people can’t imagine live without internet (me included). How else we would take part in this blog? ;) I develop websites, so it’s my earning source as well. Thanks for the internet live is little bit easier (or not).
ReplyDeleteI can’t agree with author with the social part. Yes, internet give you possibility to meet other people around the world, but it also reduce social skills and a lot of people are surfing in internet, because they are bored and prefer internet then real live experience.
1. No, I earn money on internet, I spend my free time searching the web and communicate with my friends. Some short breaks from the internet are ok, but for longer term it is simply undoable.
ReplyDelete2. Ten years ago I was using internet very rarely. Without broadband connection it was waste of time in my opinion.
Internet it's a part of my daily life. I can't imagine life without internet. It's very helpful tool using to connectivity with other people, to send a messages, to check information about events on the world. Internet is everywhere and everyone has access to it so it is impossible to life without it.
ReplyDelete10 years ago i didn't even have internet at home. Now is the most common service in our life.
I read somewhere that spending more than 3 hours daily in the Internet means being addicted. I am an addict, I don't feel well while I'm offline. Internet is a sweet convenience. Nowadays, you can do so much thanks to it, from shopping, through obtaining information you need, to chatting with your friends while being far away from them. I use the Internet as much as I can and I am enthusiastic about it. I think it should become free for all people :)
ReplyDeleteI can`t imagine my life today without access to the Internet. I think that anyone of us have the same opinion. Today internet is everything. We can make purchases on the Internet, have online bank, send letters, play games, meet new people, watch tv programs and much more. But for me internet is very important because I use it to learn. There is a lot of information and they are very available for me. Past when people did not have internett hey had a much bigger problem with getting information. I would not want to be in their place. 10 years ago the Internet was not as popular as it is now. Not everyone had access to it. What I remember it was not as "colorful" as it is now. Certainly was not as much advertising as it now. I'm sure one: it is certainly better than 10 years ago!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine my life without access to the Internet. I work remotely by Internet. I'm web developer and when Internet is offline then I stay without my lovely job :) In addition I using Internet not only to work. I can communicate with my friends and family, watch movies, play online games, buy in e-shops, meet new friends and others.
ReplyDeleteInternet ten years ago had poorly-looking web sites. There was relatively few online services. The most popular communicator was Internet Relay Chat. Now we have hundreds each of services and Internet is main source of income of many people.
I also can't imagine life without Internet, I'm using it at work, at school, when spending my free time. For me it's now needed for most of living activities. I can't think of communicating without it, going to bank few times a week, searching in encyclopedia or books for needed information. I'm addicted to Internet, without it I wouldn't earn.
ReplyDelete1.Can you imagine your life today without access to the Internet?
ReplyDeleteI can not imagine life without the Internet. It allows extremely fast communication with others and overcoming barriers of time and space. You can be in multiple places at once at a time. For example, I do not imagine the situation that at work I couldn;t send an email to my professor. Of course I work but I also have contact with my university world.
2.What did your daily experience with the Internet look like 10 years ago, and how does it look today?
10 years ago I had a much slower internet connection. Children didn;t have computers at all. I was in my backyard first person who possesed both - computer and Internet access. in those days I used the Internet mainly to chat, and satisfy my cravings. Today the Internet is a way of the communication with people I know and also is my lifestyle. wherever I am-I'm online.
